Netflix’s Transformation: From DVDs to Streaming Powerhouse

Netflix transformed from a DVD rental service to a global streaming giant through innovation and adaptability.

Netflix Growth Story: How a DVD Rental Company Became a Global Streaming Giant

Netflix is now one of the biggest names in entertainment. However, the company did not start as a streaming platform.

Its journey began in 1997 in California. Netflix started as an online DVD rental business. Customers could order movies through the internet and receive DVDs by mail. The company officially opened its online DVD store in 1998.

At the time, renting a movie usually meant visiting a physical video store. Netflix offered a more convenient option. Customers could choose movies online and receive them at home.

The Idea That Changed Netflix

Netflix soon changed its rental model. In 1999, the company introduced a subscription service without traditional due dates and late fees.

Members could keep DVDs for as long as they wanted. They could then return them and receive another movie from their queue. This model gave customers more flexibility and helped Netflix build a recurring-revenue business.

This was an important step. Netflix was no longer simply renting DVDs. It was building a long-term relationship with its customers.

The Biggest Bet: Streaming

The biggest transformation came in 2007.

Netflix moved from physical DVDs toward internet streaming as broadband connections became faster. Instead of waiting for a DVD to arrive, customers could watch movies and shows online.

This decision changed the company’s future.

Netflix understood that physical media would eventually become less important. Therefore, it invested heavily in technology and streaming infrastructure.

The company also began using data and recommendation technology to help users discover content. This made the service more personalized and encouraged people to spend more time on the platform.

From Licensed Content to Netflix Originals

Netflix then made another major move.

In 2013, the company started producing its own original shows. House of Cards became one of its early major original series.

This strategy reduced Netflix’s dependence on content licensed from other companies. More importantly, original programming gave customers a reason to subscribe specifically to Netflix.

Over time, Netflix expanded its original content across different genres and countries.

Netflix Goes Global

Netflix’s next major growth phase came from international expansion.

In January 2016, Netflix launched its service in more than 130 additional countries at the same time. This dramatically expanded its global reach.

The company then invested more heavily in local-language content. This strategy helped Netflix reach audiences outside the United States.

Shows created in individual countries could also find audiences around the world. That became one of Netflix’s biggest advantages.

Technology Became a Key Part of the Business

Netflix’s growth also required a major technology infrastructure.

The company moved its streaming operations to the cloud and completed the process in 2016. Netflix said its streaming membership base had grown eightfold compared with 2008 by that time.

Cloud infrastructure allowed Netflix to handle growing demand without relying entirely on its own physical data centres.

At the same time, better recommendation systems, streaming technology and device compatibility helped improve the overall user experience.

The End of the DVD Era

Netflix eventually left behind the business that started it all.

The company shipped its final DVD in September 2023 after 25 years of the DVD rental service. Netflix said the DVD business had helped build the foundation for its streaming future.

This decision perfectly captured Netflix’s approach to business.

The company was willing to move away from an older model even when that model had created the business in the first place.

What Made Netflix Successful?

Netflix’s growth came from several major decisions.

First, it focused on convenience. Customers could choose what they wanted without visiting a store.

Second, it built a subscription model. This created predictable recurring revenue.

Third, Netflix moved into streaming before physical media disappeared.

Fourth, it invested heavily in original content. This helped create exclusive reasons to subscribe.

Finally, Netflix expanded internationally and invested in local stories. As a result, content from one country could reach viewers across the world.

The Netflix Growth Story

Netflix’s story is ultimately a story of continuous reinvention.

The company moved from DVDs to streaming, then from licensed content to original programming, and finally from a primarily US-focused service to a global entertainment platform. Netflix itself has described these transitions as major bets that required significant investment and time.

The biggest lesson from Netflix is simple: the company did not protect its original business at all costs. Instead, it repeatedly changed its business model as technology and consumer habits evolved.

That willingness to change turned a small online DVD rental company into a global entertainment brand.
